Orofacial Myofunctional Therapyin Manhattan & Westchester County
  • Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), also called Orofacial Myology, is a specialized approach aimed at addressing and correcting improper oral muscle function, eliminating oral habits (thumbsucking, nail biting, excessive lip licking/sucking, object chewing, etc.) and correcting swallowing patterns. This therapy focuses on the muscles and structures of the face, mouth, and throat, targeting issues such as tongue thrust, feeding, and improper resting posture of the tongue and lips. Through a combination of exercises, techniques, and behavioral interventions, OMT aims to retrain and optimize the function of these muscles, promoting proper alignment, breathing, chewing, and swallowing.

  • OMT is a comprehensive therapy that not only improves oral health, but it also addresses related concerns such as speech difficulties, sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, and facial pain. OMT is tailored to each individual's needs, providing personalized treatment plans to achieve optimal oral function and overall well-being.

  • Yes, we specialize in offering OMT to adults and children 4+ years and older.

  • We start with a comprehensive evaluation to understand our clients holistically. Then, we refer out to specialized providers, if needed.  We work closely with ENTs, Orthodontists, Dentists, Pulmonologists, Allergists, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists.  OMT follows a three step process that is personalized to each client:

    1. Build muscle strength

    2. Teach proper function and positioning

    3. Create the habit with an at-home program

  • The time it takes to see results from Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) can vary depending on the individual's specific condition, severity of symptoms, and adherence to the therapy plan. We incorporate other approaches and modalities, as well as refer to other specialists, to get our clients the best results as quickly as possible.

  • Yes. We often provide OMT with Speech & Language Therapy within the same session. Additionally, we have built relationships and collaborate with other doctors and specialists to support our clients in addressing all root causes of their issues.

  • Yes. For individuals scheduled for a frenectomy, we offer pre-frenectomy care as well as post-frenectomy care where we retrain muscular patterns to eat, drink and rest in the mouth correctly.
